Avoiding Dangerous Foods

by Tamar Love Grande

Most foods that are safe for humans are also safe for dogs. However, a few foods can have deadly consequences. Please avoid feeding any of the following foods.

Avocados
The fruit, pit and plant are all toxic and can cause your dog to experience difficulty breathing and congestive heart failure.

Bones
Cooked bones and lode-bearing bones (leg, thigh) can splinter and damage a dog’s internal organs.

Cat Food
Cat food contains much higher levels of protein than dog food and should be avoided. If your dog ingests small, occasional amounts, there's no need to worry unless he has a medical condition that makes him unable to process high levels of protein.

Chocolate & Caffeine
Chocolate and caffeinated beverages can cause seizures, coma and death. The darker the chocolate the greater the danger.

Fatty & Rich Foods:
Animal fat and overly rich foods, such as pig ears, can trigger pancreatitis, a condition that is difficult to treat and often results in death.

Fruit Pits & Seeds
Apple seeds and stone fruit pits contain cyanide in quantities high enough to be dangerous to dogs. Pits can become lodged in the intestines and cause organ failure. The fruit itself (except grapes) is safe and healthy for dogs.

Grapes & Raisins
Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs. As little as a single serving of raisins can kill a dog.

Nuts
Macadamia nuts, which can cause weakness, muscle tremor and paralysis, should be avoided completely. Limit intake of other nuts—their high phosphorous content can lead to bladder stones. Peanut butter is the exception to “no nuts” rule.

Mushrooms
Never let your pets eat mushrooms found in your yard; generally, mushrooms that are safe for people to eat are also safe for dogs.

Nutmeg
Nutmeg can cause tremors, seizures and death.

Onions
Onions destroy red blood cells and can cause anemia. Garlic is safe.

Salt
Excessive salt intake can cause kidney problems.

Toothpaste
When humans brush their teeth, they spit out the paste as it contains chemicals that should not be ingested. Dogs won't spit out the toothpaste, but swallow it, so be sure to use canine toothpaste when brushing your dog's teeth.

Xylitol
Even a small amount of this sugar substitute can cause liver failure
.
